Mission

Young people are at the core of Downtown Art.  Our actors, our crews, our front of house staff are all teenagers; young people are on our board and have even formed an 18 and older ‘alumni’ group.  In partnership with these young artists, Downtown Art seeks to challenge prevailing, limited adult assumptions about the creative potential of young people and their ability to make performances of meaning, depth, skill, and artistry.

As a theater company, we believe that stories have the power to revive in us the best aspects of ourselves as human beings  - our capacities for love, courage, friendship, and honesty  - while also helping us regain our sense of humor and humility for our very human failings, our misguided efforts, our idiosyncrasies, our obsessions, and our strong but ineffectual desire to control all things to our liking.  We always hope to choose stories which can, perhaps through laughter, give us a renewed sense of human community.
