People

Ryan Gilliam (Artistic Director) has been working with young artists to make theater since 1988. In 2005, she celebrated her 100th production.  Besides directing, she has written a fourteen plays, created adaptations, choreographed and designed sets and costumes, and she has had the pleasure to work with over 1000 young people in companies of 12-18 members, each company working intensively over a four to seven month long period.  She has been Artistic Director of Downtown Art since 1992, before it becamse a youth theater.  Ryan has taught theater at the Neighborhood School, Earth School, and Tompkins Square Middle School, been featured on NY1 as a "New Yorker of the Week' and been the subject of a documentary for Japanese public television.  She currently serves as the Chair of Fourth Arts Block (FAB.)  She received a BFA from NYU's School  of the Arts and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
