For Teen Artists
What You Need To Know | Applying and Auditioning
Downtown Art works with teen artists in music and theater to create and perform original works and creative spins on the classics. Our season runs from September to June and each season, we assemble a company of 30-45 teen artists.
Downtown Art is an intensive demanding program. We are proud of our work and our reputation for quality, professionalism, and creativity. We expect a great deal from our company but dedication truly pays off in the end.
In 2011/2012 we will be seeking actors, singers, dancers (and those who can do all three!), musicians, playwrights and composers. Click for info on applying and auditioning.
Eligibility & Cost
Company membership is open to young people ages 12-19. The program is free of charge.
Selection
Company members are selected based on an audition or application. No prior experience is necessary.
Activities & Schedule
At Downtown Art, company members manage more than their artistic roles. They also have a role in the ongoing operation of the theater, which includes helping backstage and participating in our annual Bowlathon. However, almost 90% of each company members' time will be spent on artistic work.
Each company member's schedule will depend on what artistic role you have (for example, writing or acting), and which project you are working on. Most company members will have from 4-6 hours of rehearsal each week, split between afternoon afterschool and weekends. Music rehearsals are usually scheduled on Saturday mornings; other rehearsals usually take place during the afternoon.
Company members will receive a general schedule for the year. If company members will not be needed at a rehearsal or work session, they will be notified at the beginning of the month of their release dates.
Tech and Performances: Performances for a project are generally scheduled for three to four weekends. Each performance call lasts 4-5 hours. Each project will also have a 'Tech Week' of intensive rehearsal, often the final week before performances begin. During that week, there are daily rehearsals, each lasting 4-5 hours.
Downtown Art does not currently offer summer programs.
