Location
For the past seventeen years, Downtown Art has been housed on East 4th Street between Second Avenue & Bowery. In 2009, Downtown Art took on a new challenge: being without our own space while we wait for renovations to be completed on our future home at 70 East 4th Street.
Until then, Downtown Art will be rehearsing and performing in a number of different locations, including outdoors on our lot at 19 E. 3rd Street and at various rehearsal studios on E. 4th Street.
Downtown Art is the majority owner of 70 East 4th Street, a four story vacant building within the East 4th Street Cultural District and the adjoining vacant lot, which it shares with Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company.
70 East 4th Street is being renovated through over $4 million in public funding and many private gifts. Leadership commitments have been made by City Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs. The renovations are under the direction of the NYC Dept. of Design and Construction.
The expected opening date is early 2013.
